Strategic Leadership and Transformational Coaching
About me, Carissa.
Ever since I can remember, my fascination has been rooted in the intricate world of relational dynamics and the pursuit of fostering harmony and joyous interaction. Born into a multicultural family, I lived in four countries before my teens. I learnt to be on my toes, to watch and listen. I asked a lot of why questions and sought answers from reading widely and solo walks in silence. Alongside, were hours of play, noisy family gatherings, and stories that fed my imagination and soul.
For all the change of place, the one constant was feeling loved but also sensing the huge anxiety of those around me. I discovered it’s not easy to tell people what you have in your heart and mind in such a way that the other person can listen to you. I saw the impact of clumsy words however good the intention. Me included. I learnt to bring calm, to mediate family storms and draw the silent voices into the room. That passion for bridge building has energised my career and dreams.
I literally stumbled into my first role as The Private Secretary to the Ambassador of Israel at 23 having wrote a speech. After studying for a degree in property and then child psychotherapy trying to find my path, I went on to train as a broadcast journalist where keenness for self-expression and seeking the truth took me into news for the BBC and ITV. While finding the story and engaging an audience remain dear to me, my essence is more akin to a journey guide and teacher.
In defining meaningful work, the threads of my grandfather's passion for work and my father's organisational struggles have woven a profound understanding: workplaces can and should be places of joy and inspiration. This realisation propelled me towards a mission – to remove the barriers of separation and misunderstanding that so often lead to misery instead of evolution and growth.
As a former broadcast journalist, I embarked on a journey that illuminated the profound truth that "Communicating is hard."
These three words encapsulate the intricate dance of human connection. In a world where words are both our greatest tools and constant challenges, effective communication requires more than just language; it demands empathy, patience, and vulnerability.
From the subtle nuances of nonverbal cues to the power of active listening, the art of communication is an ongoing exploration of the heart and mind. It's a reminder that while the path may be challenging, the rewards—connection, collaboration, and community—are well worth the effort.
I firmly believe that anyone possesses the potential to become a skilful leader in transforming the spaces where conversations and collaboration unfold. A driver for who I partner with is built on the desire to build thriving communities at work, and in society.
It's about cultivating a set of skills that instils in you a sense of curiosity and a generous spirit that asks, 'How can we approach this differently? What does it mean to hold space that reflect the richness of our diversity and embody the world we aspire to create?
